NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON GIRLS' EDUCATION IN UGANDA

FAWE Uganda participated in the 2019 National Symposium on Girls’ Education. The symposium focused on providing a forum for key stakeholders to define ‘A girls’ education agenda for Uganda’ in the next five years (2020-2025).

It aimed at Identifying existing gaps in promoting girls’ education and designing strategies for addressing them; laying modalities for strengthening strategic partnerships and mobilizing resources for rolling out key programmes on girls’ education. 

The symposium was organized by the Ministry of Education and Sports in partnership with other Government Agencies and Education Development Partners including; Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development; UNICEF, Irish Aid, DFID and Civil Society Organizations including; FENU, Plan International, World Vision and FAWE Uganda was held under the theme Reflecting on the Gains on Girls’ Education in Uganda and Setting the Agenda for addressing the existing gaps and challenges.”

The event was preceded by a number of activities such as; mapping of on-going programmes on girls’ education in Uganda, review implementation of the National Strategy for Girls’ Education 2014-2019, establishing of a Taskforce to support the MoES - Gender Unit to organize event, popularizing the symposium in the media and mobilizing resources and support from development agencies.

At the Symposium, FAWEU featured in a number of activities including participating in planning meetings. Mrs. Susan Opok Tumusiime, the FAWE Uganda Executive Directed presented a paper on Education Financing in Uganda, a dossier clearly highlighting existing funding opportunities, gaps and areas that need urgent attention, and exhibition of the organizations work inform of publications, reports; and Information, Education and Communication materials.

The two day event was marked by a number of activities ranging from Music Dance and Drama performances, reciting poems; parallel sessions and panel of expert discussions on issues affecting children in schools namely; Status of girls’ education in Uganda, highlights of the progress on implementation of the NSGE 2014-2019, identification of key barriers to girls’ education and mapping of key programmes and projects on girls’ education in Uganda: achievements, challenges and lessons learned.

 The symposium took place on 13th -14th February, 2019 at Imperial Royale Hotel.
